My name is Chad Wernecke and I would like to provide a little background information on my topic of solar power and why I chose this reusable energy source for my sustainability presentation. Solar power is converted either directly using photovoltaic (converting solar radiation into direct electricity using semiconductors) or indirectly using concentrated solar power (systems use of mirrors or lenses to concentrate a large area of sunlight onto a small area). As for the future of solar power, a report published on cnn.com called "A Dazzling Future for Solar Power?" stated that solar power is expected to provide almost a quarter of the world’s electricity supplies by 2050 according to a new report published by the International Energy Agency (IEA). Also, in the article, IEA says that solar panels on residential and commercial buildings could compete with traditional electricity supplies by 2020 in many regions and that by 2030 that solar panels will provide five percent of global electricity. With the many positive benefits that solar power brings and how cost efficient it is for homeowners, it is no surprise that many people, including myself, find the benefits of solar power very appealing. I chose solar energy for my project so that I could learn more about the benefits and practicality of this reusable energy source.
